Air NZ and BA in Partnership
Air New Zealand and British Airways have agreed on a commercial alliance aimed at easing difficulties flying between the northern and southern hemispheres. The deal provides what the two airlines describe as ‘seamless connections’ between the two companies’ flights. It also enables the airlines to offer around the world services. It was to take effect from April 1.
The alliance has aroused some discussion about Qantas’ 19. 9% shareholding in Air New Zealand. The Australian airline can hardly be happy about the arrangement which is directly competitive, but Qantas and Air New Zealand are saying little. It is understood the alliance was engineered at senior management levels without the boards’ participation. An Air New Zea- land spokeswoman pointed out that the airline was commercially independent-and this was proof.
