Artist impression of the MD-90-30. Major differences between the MD-90 series and the current MD-B0s is in the addition of advanced technol ?gy JAE V-500 high bypass turbofans, upgraded glass cockpit and a new APU. Benefits include reduced operating costs, lower noise footprint, improved field performance and longer range. The MD-90-30, for which commitments already exist against some 240 examples, is slated to enter service around late 1994.

McDonnell Douglas MD-90
Douglas’ late 1989 launch of the MD-90 series twinjets literally rung in the death knell for the Unducted Fan (UDF) and indicated clearly that airlines, large and small, are not yet ready to embrace the radical and operationally unproven concept of the propfan.
As far as Douglas is concerned though, the MD-90 series will be more than an able successor to what had been promised by the unlaunched MD-91/92 UDFs. To achieve the same goal of a vastly improved MD-80, Douglas have taken existing operationally proven technology powerplants in the International Aero Engines V2500 series and mated them to what is basically the existing MD-80 series fuselage. The result is a quieter, more fuel-efficient medium-range jetliner boasting improved field performance, range and a reduced maintenance requirement.
For the airlines they not only have the benefit of a degree of commonality between their existing MD-80s and the new MD-90 but also benefit by having to invest less in acquiring these new generation twinjets as MDC will be able to bring all three models of the MD-90 to certification at about half the cost of developing an all new airliner.
