Britannia Airways Flies To The Sun

What was it that made Britannia Airways look more closely at the Australian charter market and take the decision to go ahead with flights to our part of the World. To find this out Australian Aviation recently visited Britannia Airways headquarters at Luton Airport, north of London, and there we spoke to their Commercial Director, Brian Christian.

The InclusiveTourAirline has been an accepted way of holiday travel in the UK for years. However, due largely to Australia’s Two Airline Policy it was never allowed to develop here. With the recent arrival in Australia of the World’s largest IT operator, Britannia Airways and the relaxation of the Government’s domestic and international aviation policy, we could see the IT market being further developed in Australia. AA airline specialist, Gordon Reid, reports from Britannia’s Luton base

“We had our eyes on flying to Australia for some time” Brian Christian told Australian Aviation. “Britannia have always had an interest in the Australian market, however when the then Minister for Transport and Communication, Gareth Evans, issued a major policy speech on Aviation in October 1987 we decided to pursue the matter further”. Brian Christian continued “Our passengers were becoming more discerning and looking for something different. The Australian market was under supplied and we felt with the media exposure of Australia through the America’s Cup, the Bicentennial Celebrations and through films and television programs from the region that the interest was there”.
