Fear and Loathing in a Macchi!

Ah yes, those were the days – on pilot’s course, having got through 60 hours on Winjeels with only one ‘loss-of-solo’, passed the basic phase of Macchi flying with reasonable success and now with about 150 total flying hours I’m the proud holder of an Instrument Rating, due more to the generosity of the IRE and the proximity of Bar Opening Time than to my questionable skills as an instrument flyer.

However, it’s the day after the Instrument Rating Test (IRT ) and guess what? It’s raining! Clouds, even! And I’m programmed for a general flying (GF) solo! So I says to self, “Self, here’s your chance to use your brand new rating and to open score in the Actual column of your log book!” Even my instructor agrees and briefs me on what to do – call for IF departure for North Eastern before taxi, do standard takeoff and departure, when VMC on top do the briefed GF sequence but – don’t infringe the buffer zones along the instrument flight (IF) departure corridors. Call for radar marshal to cloud break and if the circuit is clear, do a couple of circuits. Got that Bloggs?
