Socata/Mooney Tbm 700

With the TBM 700, TBM of France has brought to fruition a design concept developed, but not productionised by the sages of the US general aviation industry.

The concept of a pressurised single engine turboprop has been synonymous with the NASA application of advanced technology to GA that grew out of the fuel crisis of the 1970s. Whereas the genre was the logical extension of the pressurised S/E piston (Cessna’s P210), and spawned the Beech Lightning (a molded Baron airframe with a Garrett turboprop) and Mike Smith’s Propjet (an indigenous composite airframe with a P&W PT6), developers lacked the conviction to certificate and productions; presumably market softness was to blame. The fact that Socata and Mooney are now sure of the near future sales prospects in this aircraft class reflects a firming market, a turn about which can be largely attributed to the exciting and demonstrated uniqueness of the Piper Malibu design.
