Proponents of the eventual Fighter World concept in the early eighties were quick to secure two Mirage fighters prior to their departure for Woomera and eventual disposal. Retained, and immaculately rebuilt, are A3-3 in early 76 Sqn markings and dual seater A3-102 of 2OCU. A3-3 was actually the very first Australian built Mirage, being handed over to the RAAF in November 1963. In its long service life this Mirage logged 3,580hrs and was eventually retired in 1987. Dual seat -102 went operational in December 1966, being retired some two decades later. The Fighter World display hangar can be seen in the background above A3-3. (Jim Thorn)

Fighter World a New Concept in Promoting Aviation History

A new concept in commemorating the history and achievements of the RAAF’s fighter squadrons, past and present, is to be established at Williamtown air force base, north of Newcastle.

Appropriately named Fighter World, the innovative exhibition will be a first in that it won’t in traditional terms be ‘just another aviation museum’, but rather an interactive hands on display of the RAAF’s fighter squadrons at work in the defence of the nation. The ultimate aim of Fighter World is to be able to educate the public as to the mission of fighter command and to highlight the overall importance of having a strong defence deterrent in the first place.

Situated near the RAAF Williamtown main entrance, Fighter World will comprise a large multi deck display hangar linked with two additional buildings which will house ancillary displays, a theatrette and simulator. The site itself is leased from the Commonwealth for a nominal rental while the Federal Government has already backed the project with a $500,000 grant. An additional $400,000 sponsorship has recently been announced by Caltex while a number of other sponsors, including Westfield, are about to join the project. Total project cost is estimated at $3m with Fighter World scheduled to open its doors to the public late next year.
