1990 Major Airline Directory
In our opening comments last year we made mention that the majority of airlines in our region were experiencing a period of solid growth and that future prospects looked good. Less than six months later airlines in Australia were plunged into the most damaging industrial dispute in their history with the mass resignation of the majority of domestic airline pilots. Most airlines in Australia are predicting losses for the twelve months ending June 30th.
Another 15 months have passed and there is still no solution to the congestion at Sydney Airport with its lack of runway space and terminal facilities. Any new entrant into the airline market will have to sit and watch theirprofits being burned up as their aircraft circle over Sydney waiting for a landing clearance.
In spite of all this orders for aircraft from operators covered by our Directory continue to surge ahead. In this period we have recorded a total of 79 firm commitments at a total cost of some $US5bn. Major orders in this total include another six Boeing 747-400s for Qantas to give them a fleet total of 14 by the end of 1991. Also for Qantas are seven Boeing 767-300ERs, which will take their fleet of this popular type to 12. Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services (AWAS) continue to place orders in multi-million dollar lots, though it should be remembered that they are ordering aircraft for delivery well into the 1990s. AWAS have added three new types to their portfolio in this period. They are the A300-600R, A321 and the Canadair RegionalJet. The East-West re-equipment order went to the BAe 146-300 of which the first of eight is due for delivery in August. The order for this British Aerospace jet was another blow for Fokker as their fleet numbers dwindled. In Australia only two F27s remain in airline service out of a fleet which was once in the 60s. Ansett are presently advertising for sale F28s, F27s and F50s while East-West are having trouble moving their F27-500fleet. In New Zealand Air NZ are looking for buyers for their F27-100 fleet.
