On The Airbands

Jean Baker of ‘Plane Talk’ from the excellent American magazine ‘Monito(ing Times’ is now our resident regular ‘Airbands’ correspondent in the USA.

Jean tells me that an extra one megahertz of band space has been allocated to the VHF airband in the US by the Federal Communications Commission. The aero comms band now finishes at 136. 975 MHz instead of 135. 975 MHz as it does here. There are no plans currently being formulated to do the same in Australia at this stage. The US system has been suffering from too few frequencies for the large number of aircraft using the system and channel overcrowding. The extra one meg will improve this for a short time.
