The prototype CBA-12.3 19 seat high speed commuter made its maiden flight on July 19. The Embraer/FMA CBA-12.3 is designed to cruise at 350kts and to replace existing pressurised commuters which generally cruise around 100kts slower than the new Brazilian/Argentinean pusher. The CBA-12.3, with its large cabin and high speed, will also be actively marketed as a corporate aircraft. CBA-12.3 total commitments stand at 150 with the first aircraft entering service late next year.

Trancisco/Piper Deal Cancelled:
Transisco Industries and Piper Aircraft have terminated their investment agreement (refer p. 13 August AA) because of legal problems. The investment plan would have helped Piper through its current cash flow crisis, with Transisco providing an injection of funds and setting up a separate company to be responsible for Piper’s aftermarket parts operations. Unresolvable legal problems regarding the manufacture by outside companies of proprietary components for Piper aircraft caused the deal’s termination. The cancellation is a blow to Piper which is seeking long-term investors so it can pay vendors and maintain aircraft production. The company, already struggling with a production backlog valued at $US175m, has received over 150 additional orders this year.
Final Registrations Released:
The final two blocks of VH registrations have been released by the CAA. These will be prefixed with Y and Z as Q and V will never be released for safety reasons. Once these are filled, it is expected that a new system encompassing numerals will be approved. It is expected, for example, that this will be in the form of VH-B3MC with the use of a single numeral greatly increasing the range of potential registrations. Again, for security and safety reasons the numerals, zero, one and two will not be used.
