50 Years Ago …

October 1. The Battle of Britain continues but its nature has changed considerably. Air supremacy has not been gained by the Luftwaffe and could not be expected to be achieved before the onset of winter and deteriorating weather.

During the last half of September major daylight attacks have proven costly, rising to a loss rate the Germans cannot afford. Between September 7-30, 433 planes have been lost with most of their crews. On the other hand, RAF Fighter Command in the same period has lost 242 but, more importantly, a high proportion of British pilots have been saved by parachute, landing in their own territory.
