Instant Air Traffic Control-Thanks To The RAAF

Aircraft movements at this year’s Motor Cycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island and the Melbourne Cup at Flemington will, for the first time, be under the control of the RAAF’s impressive new Mobile Air Traffic Control System – MATCS.

The MATCS is Australian designed and built; not surprisingly this exciting project was a joint winner of the Government Technology Productivity Silver Award. The other winner was the Pilot Part Task Trainer desktop micro computer.

The MATCS will be supported at Flemington and Phillip Island by a joint CAA and RAAF team. Its involvement in these two events will hopefully ensure that the anticipated 350 helicopter movements at Flemington and the 1,000 mixed aircraft movements at Phillip Island will take place efficiently and safely.
