A West German Navy review has recommended the force cut back its fleet of maritime strike Tornados in response to the easing of East-West tensions. The move is yet another chapter in Tornado cutbacks, though for once it does not directly affect BAe, which in recent months has been hit hard by several order cancellations. The Middle East crisis has, however; at least lessened the likelihood that the Royal Saudi Air Force will follow the recent trend and not place follow on orders for the type

Towed Missile Decoys for Usn:
The US Navy is equipping its Grumman A-6E Intruders with what Grumman has claimed is the first operational active towed missile decoy.
The decoy forms part of the Integrated Defence Avionics Program (IDAP) which, together with the A-6E Support Weapon Improvement Program (SWIP), will eventually see about 110 A-6Es updated from 1993 with the new system designed· to· detect and counter incoming missiles. The updated system utilises an active onboard S-band radar to provide all round detection coverage for the aircraft, and a combination of chaff, IR flares and towed decoys to counter the missile threat. The A-6 Intruders will each carry three decoys which are fired from the aircraft on a trailing cable, the the incoming missile being drawn to the decoy and not the A-6
