Peace Through Strength
It seemed . that the printer’s ink was barely dry on our August issue Reece pleading for sanity before Australia’s defence vote was cut yet again, when out of the woodwork comes the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
The point we were trying to make in that editorial, and the accompanying feature (p. 22), was simply that threats mostly emerge with little fanfare and even less warning time. How many military strategists, dedicated peaceniks or average citizens picked four days before the invasion that it perhaps wasn’t a great time to be visiting Kuwait? Nobody, right! And that’s the very point we were making-that peace only ever comes through strength. It has never come through the wishy washy ‘peace in our time’ advocates that inhabit the ALP’s left wing or people who become senators on that platform alone.
