The EMB-145 will actually share a 70-75% component commonality with the Brasilia
Update – Embraer EMB-145
Emraer Emb – 145
At the Paris Airshow in June 1989, Embraer formally announced the launch of the EMB-145 regional jet, based on the successful Brasilia propjet and though the new jet is more than two years from certification it is already shaping up as a successful program.
The challenge driving the EMB-145 project was to build a simple to operate and maintain regional jet of 45-50 seats with a maximum range of at least 1,000nm which could service routes that cannot be served efficiently by either larger jets or current generation turboprop airliners. The new aircraft was to provide direct competition for the Canadair RJ regional jet (refer p. 81 July 89 AA) and the Saab 2000 high speed regional turboprop (refer p. 23 September 89 AA) and, like its competitors, would be based on an already proven and successful smaller design-in this case the Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia.
Embraer had previously produced a very successful family of both military and civil aircraft, but the EMB-145 was to be the company’s first civil jet transport plane. Development of the new aircraft has not, however, presented any real difficulties to the company which, as well as its own multi engine designs-in particular the Bandeirante and Brasilia- and license built designs such as the Seneca 3, has had extensive experience with jet aircraft like the AMX and licence built EMB-326GB Xavantes for the Brazilian Air Force. The company consequently has had considerable experience with both multi engine designs and jet aircraft, so has been able to use knowledge gained from its earlier programs to design and build its first multi engine jet airliner.
