 East-West Unions the Go

A spate of recent cooperation agreements between Eastern European and Western manufacturers highlight the desire of each side to benefit from the opening up of eastern Europe and the crumbling of communism.

Soviet manufacturers lead the way with alliances with western aerospace companies, The Soviets possess the expertise in aircraft design, but are at present somewhat lacking in engine and component technology. Agreemerts signed with foreign companies are therefore aimed at overcoming this, and there appears no shortage of western companies willing to oblige. Ilyushin and CFM are already negotiating to re-engine Aeroflot II-868 with CFM56-5C28. Initial studies indicate that replacing the wide-body’s four Soviet engines with those of CFM would increase range by 30-40%. An engine replacement deal could mean an order for CFMI of 300+ engines.
