Sydney Heliport Ready Early Next Year

The Helicopter Association of Australia (HAA) expects to open Sydney’s badly needed and long awaited Sydney Central Business District Heliport early next year. Situated on abandoned wharfs at Pyrmont, an inner city suburb undergoing gentrification, the heliport has tacit approval from the State Government. The support will probably be needed as the previous heliport, on the same site, was closed by the state’s Labor Party following an aggressive and vigorous anti noise campaign from residents in the suburb of Balmain, who are separated from the site by about one kilometre of Sydney harbour.

Following the withdrawal from the tendering process for the heliport’s management of Melbourne based Grollo Brothers, which operates an Agusta A109, the HAA is now the only bidder currently negotiating with the State Maritime Services Board, which owns the site, over what will be done at the heliport. Current plans see space for the parking of 12 helicopters and an office and terminal complex. Hangars will not be allowed.
