United Launches the 777:

United Airlines have become the Boeing 777 launch customer with a firm order for 34 of the new widebody twinjet and options on 34 more.

The 777 was chosen by United to replace its aging fleet of DC-10s on domestic routes. The aircraft will be configured for 363 passengers, 38 in first class and 325 in economy. The specified powerplant is the Pratt & Whitney PW4000, which represents a significant victory for P&W over the General Electric GE90 which is aimed specifically at the 777 project.
