Touchdown in the Traffic

I was off to Melbourne for a few days – and looking forward to catching up with old friends.

I use my Port Macquarie based Cessna 210 aircraft on business a good deal, but this trip was a private one. I had four passengers – three of them for Wangaratta, where I planned to land at the Air World strip. My other passenger, a woman neighbour, was travelling through to Melbourne with me.

The weather could have been better. With a strong sou-easterly stream off the Tasman Sea, the forecast was for widespread cloud and rain: the freezing level was 6,000ft with cloud tops around 10,000ft. But having held an instrument rating for many years, I was in no way deterred. I flight planned at 10,000ft via the navaids at Singleton, Bathurst, Cowra,Wagga, and Albury to Wangaratta, thence via Eildon Weir direct to Moorabbin at 6,000ft.
