TNT/Ansett Air Freight are by far the single largest processor of air freight within Australia. Flagship of the fleet is the Boeing 707 VH-HTC, which is backed up for domestic operations by AAF's 727 VH-RMX and a growing fleet of BAe 146 Quiet Traders. (right) Heavy metal aside, the national backbone of the air freight industry, particularly where small courier consignments are concerned, are the squadrons of small twins which ply the secondary air ways each night delivering their consignments to the hub airports for either road distribution or anloading to the TNT/AAF jets. On Any Week Night
As Australia’s domestic interstate air routes are deregulated, air freight will become an even more important aspect of revenue generation. To access the current state of play in the Australian air cargo environment, Australian Aviation’s Peter Gamble interviews the main players. Australia’s two domestic airlines are well aware that deregulation has arrived.
Talk to either about it and the general perception is a quiet determination, with common themes emerging: How can we still improve our service? Are we delivering everything that the customer wants? Is there some portion of the market that we are not addressing? What is our market share likely to be in a year’s time? What is the most efficient way to satisfy all aspects of a door-to-door service? (And there are many. )
On a week night around Australia, most of the freight that moves by air does so at the behest of five large organisations: Ansett, Australian Airlines, TNT, Mayne Nickless, and Australia Post. But what about all of those other air freight forwarders, one may justifiably ask?
