VH-PAB, the 125-F400 imported by Pacific Aviation and subject of this story. Its immaculate presentation belies the fact it was built in 1971. (Stewart Wilson)
Flight Impressions – BAe 125-F400
British Aerospace 125-F400
In the early 1970s, Hawker Siddeley (later part of British Aerospace) was facing a problem with its best-selling medium-sized corporate jet, the HS. 125.
In 1972 the company launched a new version of the aircraft, the Series 600. This variant featured a slightly lengthened fuselage and cleaned up nose/cockpit area when compared with its predecessors (among numerous other refinements) and was powered by a pair of 3,750Ib thrust Rolls-Royce Viper turbojets offering about 11% more power than before.
The -600 offered better performance than had been available before but suffered to an extent by its noisy and thirsty Vipers in a world which was becoming more concerned about oil reserves and noise pollution. Production of the – 600 amounted to 92 aircraft between 1972and 1976 when another new version was put into production, the 125-700. The -700 was basically a -600 with 3,700lb thrust Garrett AiResearch TFE731 turbofans installed in place of the Vipers, and instantly the aircraft was transformed. With the same fuel capacity as its predecessor, the -700 could fly up to 60% further (or use about 35% less fuel over a given distance) and make substantially less noise whilst doing so.
