The 767-300ER is proving a most useful aircraft for Qantas and is the only QF 767 to accommodate a specific first class cabin.By the end of next year Qantas will boast a fleet of 19 767s, 12 of which will be the larger capacity -300ER model as depicted in this photo. (Qantas)

Part Thirty-Two in a Series Examining the Airlines That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
For Qantas, the Boeing 767 has assumed a place of increasing importance in its global network. It has played a major part in improving profitability by economically operating on routes too thin for 747s and servicing new routes ideally suited to a smaller long distance airliner.
During 1983, Qantas’ selection for the preferred new twin had narrowed to either the Airbus A310-300 or the Boeing 767-200ER. The basic Qantas requirement was for four twin engined airliners capable of flying maximum passenger payload sectors in excess of 4,000nm (7,412km). When the decision was made in late 1983, it favoured the Boeing product. As part of an $860m order for nine Boeing airliners, Qantas announced the order of six Boeing 767-200ERs in addition to three 747-300s. The first two 767s were due for delivery in September and October 1985 with the remainder due at monthly intervals from December 1985. It marked a major departure away from the all 7 4 7 fleet, but proved to be the right decision in the years ahead as shown in improving balance sheets.
