Embraer Announces Significant Workforce Cuts:

Embraer have announced a major organisational restructuring and job cuts aimed at cutting expenditures by about $US50m.

According to a company spokesman, the “drastic measures were adopted to put the company back in the profitability track and to make its size consistent with the revenue generating programs currently in production”. Embraer has experienced funding difficulties because of development of the EMB-145 regional jet and delays in payment for hardware delivered to the Brazilian (AMX) and various foreign governments (Tucano). The resulting cash flow crisis has forced: Embraer to delay payments to banks and suppliers and to accumulate a $US560m short term debt. The Tucano was not produced during 1990 because of customers’ funding problems, while the Italian government’s decision to cut 1990 AMX production by 30% cost several hundred jobs.
