MDC Defends Apache
McDonnell Douglas Helicopter (MOH) has strongly defended the AH-64A Apache against reports of poor reliability in service.
A recently released US Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO) report alleges that the Apache’s reliability has consistently failed to meet the US Army’s peacetime goals and in a combat environment its reliability can only be expected to fall even lower. The pre-Gulf crisis GAO report included a survey of 11 active Apache squadrons based in the USA and Germany between January 1989 and April 1990. It found that the Apache’s mission availability ranged between 29% and 61%, with an average of just under 50%.
