Ansett Express: Deregulation’s Hub Buster
The late 1990 launch of Ansett Express is to date probably the most significant first step by the pre-deregulation carriers at reshaping the Australian domestic air transport environment.
The initiation of Compass services and the inevitable flood of heavily discounted fares by all carriers has been welcomed by virtually everybody except, naturally, the senior managements of the established airlines Yield had been the big loser in the battle to fill aircraft through the traditionally quiet New Year period and into a working year where business traffic is expected to be some-what less than vibrant.
Amidst this scenario of upheaval though, Ansett have struck a more than positive chord with a vast army of travellers with the launch of Ansett Express. The primary aim of this ‘new’ airline is to bypass the congested hubs of Sydney and Melbourne and offer direct jet services to a wide range of secondary point to point ports. We almost hate to say it again (as AA often has in the past, ad nauseam) but those readers who live in Sydney or Melbourne cannot appreciate that almost everybody else this side of the Alice has to transit either, or sometimes both, those points of chronic congestion to get anywhere else. This has done little to ease congestion at either airport while greatly increasing travel- ling time and ticket cost, and reducing the general enthusiasm to travel by air in the first place.
