Section 41 modifications provide valuable income for ASTAAS. Each mod program involves the virtual rebuilding of the entire 747 nose section, literally only the skin remaining intact as each internal frame and stringer (some 7,000 parts) is replaced.

ASTAAS Flies High On 747
With the global growth of the airline industry demanding that an ever aging world airliner fleet be kept flying, ASTAAircraft Services (ASTAAS) are poised to take full advantage of the potentially lucrative international airliner maintenance trade.
ASTAAS is one of eight business units of parent companyAeroSpace Technologies of Australia(ASTA), which was established in 1986 to take over from the financially and managerially troubled Government Aircraft Factories. ASTAAS itself was given the following Mission Statement: “To provide major maintenance, modifications, repairs and refurbishment for commercial passenger and transport jet aircraft. ”
Very soon after being established in 1988, it became obvious that ASTAAS should target the high value Boeing 747 maintenance market. With record sales in the 1980s, the aging of early model aircraft and, perhaps most importantly, the requirement for Section 41 modifications to be completed, more and more airlines would need contractors to work on their aircraft – and ASTAAS would be there to offer its services with its purpose built, 747 capable maintenance hangar at AvalonAirfield.
