Aussies In The Gulf

On 2 August 1990 Iraq invaded and overran the Emirate of Kuwait. The world condemned this open act of aggression and as a response to this aggression, on Friday 10 August 1990 the Australian Prime Minister committed three Australian warships to assist allied forces in the Middle East.

The warships chosen to participate were the Guided Missile Frigates HMAS Adelaide (FFG 01) and Darwin (FFG 04) in addition to the replenishment vessel HMAS Success (AOR 304). On the same day the RAN Air Station Nowra was tasked to provide two S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters from the Seahawk Introduction and Transition Unit (SITU) and three AS350B Squirrel hell-copters from HC 723 Squadron to the Task Group.
