Bae-Ansett Flying College Launched
On 6 December 1990 the formal launch of a project long in gestation was announced – the $84m British AerospaceAnsett Flying College, to be established at Tamworth, NSW as one of the world’s premier airline pilot training establishments.
The BAe-Ansett Flying College has its origins in the BAe training academy established at Prestwick, UK to meet airlines’ pilot training needs (refer p. 54 May 88 AA). Demand was such that potential customers were being turned away due to a lack of capacity. Much interest was coming from Asia, so a new college in the Australasian region was deemed logical to target the potentially valuable Asian airline market. Ansett expressed interest in the concept in 1988 so joined forces with BAe to establish a college in Australia. Once the project was announced, 37 cities and towns entered the race to win the college, all recognising the potential benefits to their community of such a venture.
