Allison have completed flight testing of the new GMA2100 turboprop with Dowty composite propeller onboard aP-3A Orion. The engine was initially developed to power the now cancelled Lockheed P-7A, but may now power a proposed updated Orion variant, the P-3H. The P-3H proposal involves combining the P-3C fuselage with a new wing, the GMA2100 powerplant, a new cockpit and Update JVavionics. Lockheed are hopeful of selling the P-3H to the US Navy and European nations previously considered potential P-7A buyers.

Jindalee Construction Approved:
Cabinet in late December finally approved the construction of the Australian developed Jindalee over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) network in northern Australia.
The project cost of Jindalee – which was successfully tested against USAF B-1B Lancer bombers during the July ’90 Pitch Black operations – has been set at $970m which in addition to the prime contract provides for four years of maintenance, support and other associated project costs. It was also announced by Senator Robert Ray, Minister for Defence, that Telecom had been chosen as the preferred tenderer for the project. the Jindalee project has a local content of 70%, including sophisticated research and development, and an additional range of defence offsets which will effectively lift the level of Australian industry involvement in the project to around 80%.
