The Royal Flying Doctor Service has signed options to purchase two Pilatus PC-12 utility aircraft as part of a replacement program for its Piper Navajo fleet. In RFDS service, the PC-12's cabin could accommodate three stretchers plus medical personnel and all necessary inflight medevac equipment. First flight of the PC-12 is planned for May this year with customer deliveries commencing in January 1993. Pilatus now holds over 30 options for the aircraft.

Mr Barry Matheson has been appointed as the regional PR Manager for American Airlines.

Cessna has unveiled the latest version of the successful Caravan series, the Grand Caravan. Powered by a 675shp P&W PT6A-114A engine, the aircraft has a cruise speed of 182kt (337km/h), a maximum range of 963nm (1,785km), a useful load of 2,205kg, and displays excellent STOL capabilities. It can carry 340 cu ft of cargo plus an additional 111 cu ft in an optional under-fuselage pod.

Mr Bill Mattes has been appointed Chairman of the Essendon Airport Chamber of Commerce. British Airways has appointed Mr Richard Miller as Sales and Marketing Manager Australia/NZ. Mr John Pascoe, deputy chairman and CEO of George Wes- ton Foods, and Mr James Strong, former GM of Australian Airlines, have been appointed to the Board of Qantas for three year terms. AVM Hans Roser (rtd) has joined Kinhill Engineers as Manager, Defence Group. Memorex Telex has appointed Mr Michael Squires General Manager of its Asia Pacific Airlines Business Group. Capt Mike Terrell has been appointed Deputy GM of Ansett Australia. Mr Anton Well- enreiter has been appointed Lufthansa’s new Regional Director for Australia and NZ. And Vale Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, legendary aircraft designer who died in December aged 80. Johnson set up Lockheed’s “Skunk Works” in 1943 and was involved in the development of such aircraft as the P-38, F-80, Constellation, C-130, Neptune, F-104, U-2 and SR-71.
