CAA Announces Major ATC Reform

Caa Atc Proposal a Major Step Towards Airspace Management Reform

The Civil Aviation Authority has recently announced a massive reorganisation of Air Traffic Services (ATS). Our present system comprises six Flight Information Regions, based around the mainland capital cities where our Air TrafficService Centres are situated.

These were created in a previous age of technology and suited the equipment and airspace management of the time. Modern communications technology has made consolidation of these facilities a practical alternative.

In place of the present six FlRs, it is proposed that there be just two. Melbourne and Brisbane have been chosen to host the large ATS Centres that would be the hub of the two FlRs. All services except airport visual control would be provided from the Centres. Australia would be split diagonally from Sydney across to Port Hedland, Melbourne controlling to the south-west and Brisbane to the north-east of that line. All the required radar and radio programs will be relayed to the centres by satellite communications.
