Though Covering Only a Nine Month Period, This Issue of Our Major Airline Directory Covers Events Which Could Have a Far Reaching Effect on the Survival of Some of the Airlines in Our Region.
Events in the Gulf have badly affected airlines around the world. Passenger loads have fallen as a result of the threat of terrorism while costs have increased due to the rising cost of aviation fuel. Another impost has been the additional flying done by some International operators to bypass the Gulf region. For Australia came the long awaited arrival of airline deregulation, though to date only one new airline, Compass, has started operations. With the economy in a recession any potential operator is at present deferring a start up date. Deregulation in Australia, it appears, is currently no different from the North American experience. The travelling public have been swamped with a multitude of promotional fares and though there may be short term benefits for some, it would appear that most airlines are struggling to break even.
Orders for aircraft from airlines in our region are well down on previous years. In the nine months that this report covers we can only record 12 definite orders for new aircraft. In the two previous issues of the Airline Directory comparable figures were 76 and 79 respectively. Of the 12 aircraft, only 5 were for airlines in our region, Australian Airlines’ 3 Boeing 737-400s, and Air Nauru’s 2 Boeing 737-400s. The other 7 aircraft ordered, 2 A300-600Rs and 5 Boeing 737-SOOs were for Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services.
