Air Fatalities Lower but Accidents Up
Air accidents in NZ rose almost 20% last year but the number of fatalities fell 25% to 18, reports the NZ Ministry of Transport.
According to air transport division figures, the number of accidents involving serious injury- compared with the annual average of the previous ten years -increased 42% to 21 in 1990. The number of people seriously injured increased 30% to 29. Total air accidents rose 18. 2% to 146. Estimates prepared by the US Federal Aviation Administration reveal that the cost to New Zealand in fatalities and injuries from air accidents was at least $NZ30m. But the estimate does not include the cost of damage to the aircraft.
