Profile – Boeing’s Heavy Jet Heritage
Boeing’s Heavy Jet Heritage
The Boeing 707/KC-135 family represents perhaps the greatest success story injet transport design. Part Two of this three part indepth Profile examines the development and service of the commercial 707 family, which was produced for thirty years in some nine distinct variants, and which continues to grace the skies with the prospects of doing so for many years to come . . .
The Boeing 707 can rightly be regarded as the aircraft which not only established jetliners as the choice of airlines worldwide in both long haul and high density markets, but also revolutionised the way mankind travels the earth.
Unlike the US Air Force, which embraced jet transportation with open arms when it purchased the KC/C-135 tanker/transport, the commercial airline community was somewhat more reluctant to adopt jet transport aircraft, or more to the point most airlines needed more convincing that the new 707 warranted a fleet update program. Fresh in the minds of airline boards and the travelling public alike were the traumatic problems experienced by the British De Havilland DH104 Comet, two of which had fatally crashed at about the same time as the 367-80 was entering its flight test program.
