Qantas 767-200 VH-EAJ. The benefits of the 767 in QF service cannot be overestimated as the airline struggles through lean times. A decade ago Qantas flew only the 747, so when loads declined the airline had no option but to cancel flights and in many cases operate the surviving flights at uneconomic load factors. The long range 767 can now take over from the 747 on many routes maintaining schedule frequency, viable payloads and making a profit where the larger aircraft wouldn't. By year end Qantas will operate a fleet of 19 767s, a dozen of which will be the stretched -300 version. At this time the airline will also operate up to 32 747s, 14 of which will be -400s.
