Boeing delivered its 75th 747-400 in May, the aircraft having now entered service with JAL, which incidentally remains the largest 747 customer with 194 ordered since 1966. The airline currently operates some 69 747s of all models, 10 being -400s of which a further 30 are on order. Total 747 sales stand at 1,157

707 Made “Economically Obsolete”?:
A Federal Aviation Administration directive, patterned after a Boeing recommendation for structural modifications, threatens to make the 707/720 “economically obsolete”, according to Av Week.
The directive comes as a result of a Boeing recommendation prompted by fatigue cracking and corrosion detected in the aircraft. The FAA notes that some 43 US registered 707/720s and up to 400 foreign aircraft could be affected by the directive. Kits for upgrading the aircraft cost $US380,000, with associated costs taking the upgrades closer to the $US1m mark. This, it is claimed, will make it economically unviable to update the older generation aircraft, particularly in a time of declining used aircraft prices.
