The Embraer EMB-145 design now features a completely revised aerodynamic configuration. The most noticeable feature is the new wing, with 22.3 deg sweepback at 25% of the mean aerodynamic chord, with the engine pods now slung underneath. The fuselage remains externally similar, though the nose has been lengthened to house the longer landing gear needed for the new underwing engines. A one tenth scale model of the aircraft has entered wind tunnel testing, and Embraer hope that development can now proceed at a steady rate to get the troubled program back on track.

FAA Acts on Malibu Crashes:
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Piper are acting to curb the spate of Malibu crashes, with a type rating for Malibu pilots being considered.
At least eight Malibus – six in the US, one in Mexico and one in Japan – have been lost during the past two years as a result of apparent inflight break-ups. Though investigations are still underway and final conclusions have not yet been made, the FAA has decided that “rule making cannot wait until investigation is complete . . . “, and has therefore introduced an emergency airworthiness directive for the aircraft. The directive stipulates that no flight be undertaken into actual IMC or forecast moderate or severe turbulence; the autopilot is not to be used for changes of altitude; pitot heat and alternative induction air must be used except during takeoff and landing; and the vertical speed and altitude selection control panel must be removed if fitted.
