Boeing has actively marketed the 707 tanker concept worldwide and as a result several air forces have accepted the aircraft into their inventories. Seen here refuelling a USAF F-105F, Boeing's prototype 707 tanker featured Beech 1080 refueling pods and a viewing camera pod in the lower rear fuselage.

Boeing’s Heavy Jet Heritage

The Boeing 707/KC-135 family represents perhaps the greatest success story ever injet transport design. The conclusion of our indepth three part Profile examines the military service of 707s worldwide and the development of specialist 707 derivatives which today serve as vital frontline defence weapons . . .

Just as the KC-135 was recognised as a prime defence asset bythe US Air Force and the commercial 707 marketing phenomenon by the world’s long haul airlines, air forces around the world have come to acquire the Boeing 707 to undertake roles ranging from transport to tanker to electronic warfare aircraft. In the process several new and very important 707 derivatives have been developed.

The first military 707 customer was the US Air Force, which as well as having a requirement for the KC/C-135 tanker/transport, was in need of a specialist VIP or high priority cargo aircraft. Hence the purchase of three VC-137As, the first of which flew on 7 April 1959. The VC-137A was essentially a 707-120 series aircraft, except its interior was furnished somewhat more luxuriously with specialist electronic communications equipment being installed. The forward area of the cabin contained a communications centre, galley, toilet and an eight seat passenger compartment. The centre area incorporated an airborne headquarters and meeting room with a conference table, large swivel chairs, a projection screen for films and two convertible sofa beds. The aft cabin was fitted out with 14 double reclining passenger seats, two tables, three galleys, two toilets and closets.
