It is not only the major airframers which are flying into uncharted airspace, also affected by the market's ups and downs are the smaller commuter manufacturers. In this photo, workmen prepare a fuselage of an ATR72. ATR appear destined for a big future following their recently ratified acquisition of Boeing Canada (nee DHC) and their involvement with Deutsche Aerospace in a 1101130 seat jetliner.
What’s Ahead For Aircraft Manufacturers?
Building commercial aircraft has always been a risky business.
Betting the company is the standard high stakes gamble every time a manufacturer develops a plane. But airframe builders have never faced as much uncertainty as now. And it is not over such a simple question as the chances of recovering multi-billion dollar research costs on new models, but whether the projections on which the entire industry relies are sound.
As if that were not enough, the industry itself may face some of the convulsions currently rocking its airline customers. Some manufacturers are not doing well, and hope to spread their risks. Others are consolidating. And potential new entrants, such as Japan and the USSR, seek to join this fast paced, high stakes, uncertain race.
