Aermacchi Acquisition Boosts RNZAF
Aermacchi Acquisition to Give Rnzaf a Timely Boost
The Royal New Zealand Air Force recently took delivery of its first new aircraft type for twenty years, the Aermacchi MB-339C trainer.
The aircraft were handed over to the RNZAF on 19 April 1991 in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Defence and officials from Aermacchi and Rolls-Royce at RNZAF Ohakea, in the Man- awatu district of the North Island. New Zealand is the first “foreign’ customer to buy the type. Earlier versions have been flying worldwide since 1977 but the RNZAF is the first air force outside Italy to fly this latest ‘C’ model.
Fifteen more Aermacchis are to follow in groups of three, at six monthly intervals. The last will enter service in September 1993. These aircraft are urgently needed to provide the training bridge between the Pacific Aerospace CT-4B basic trainer and the front line A-4K Skyhawk strike aircraft- as well as the RNZAF’s other types, such as the Lockheed P-3K Orion, C-130H Hercules and BAe Andovers.
