July 1 – North Africa. General Claude Auchinleck is appointed C-in-C Middle East. General Wavell, out of favour with Churchill since the failure of the battleaxe offensive, takesAuchinleck’s old post as C-in-C India.

Tobruk remains besieged but the defenders have not stayed docile. General Morshead’s program of maintaining constant outward pressure on the perimeter through vigorous night patrols and skirmishes is paying dividends. The line around the Salient forced by the Germans at the end of April has been advanced by around 2,000 yards (1,800m), leaving it about 3,000 yards (2,700m) deep in the middle.
