The Canadair Regional Jet (RJ) has made its first flight and has now entered the flight testing phase of the certification program. The aircraft, which is the first twin engined jetliner in its class, is expected to generate demand for up to 1,000aircraft in the next 15 years, according to some industry analysts. It currently faces direct competition from the Embraer EMB-145, which is far behind schedule, and also the Saab 2000twin propliner. First delivery to launch customer DLT, a Lufthansa regional subsidiary carrier, is expected mid-1992

Etops Well Proven:
Extended range twin operations (ETOPS) have been well and truly proven to date, with some 125,000 overwater flights marred by only five inflight engine failures during an ETOPS portion of the service, with four of these occurring in the first year.
The first ETOPS flight was in May 1985, and since that time airlines worldwide have taken advantage of the relaxed rules which at last recognised the advances in engine technology, which made ETOPS possible. ETOPS was initially introduced for 60 minute flights for certain airframe/engine and operator experience/proficiency criteria by the US Federal Aviation Administration, though this was soon extended to 75 minutes for Caribbean twinjet operators.
