Air Force Suffers in Force Structure Review

Although the claims for and against will continue for a long time yet, the Royal Australian Air Force, on the surface, has not come out well under the Government’s revamped and rationalised Defence policy.

The fact is that the operating hours of the F-111C strike/reconnaissance jets and the relatively new multirole F/A-18 Hornets will be curtailed so that their life can be extended well into the next century. The fact that RAAF Reservists will be encouraged to fly these frontline aircraft is a breakthrough although the details are still a little obscure. It is planned that experienced jet pilots, with further training and additional hours, will logically increase the pool of pilots available in a Defence emergency.
