Jindalee Project Proceeding On Target

Australian defence scientists have recently lifted part of the top secrecy veil that surrounds the Jindalee over-the horizon radar project.

At an exclusive briefing for Australian Aviationat Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) laboratories in Salisbury, near Adelaide, they showed its displays, gave an indication of how accurate it can be at various ranges and told how they were working on ways to further improve it.

Despite the defence cutbacks, the two station $950 million Jindalee over-the-horizon radar network (JORN) remains one of the projects that still has a top spending priority. Its ability to track ships and aircraft at ranges of 3,000km (and theoretically this can go as far as 5-6,000km) forms the basis of regional surveillance that underpins Australia’s defence posture.
