The CAA is investigating the possibility of introducing a new light aircraft class based broadly on the existing European Very Light Aircraft (VLA) requirement. Catering for aircraft between the existing Light Personal Aircraft (LPA) category of 101.55 and traditional lighties such as Cessna 152/172, Cherokees, etc in US FAR23, the VL A would cover aircraft with a MTOW between 450kg and 1,500kg.

Royal Aero Club in Receivership:
The new class would more importantly for the first time ever allow off the shelf ‘factory’ purchases of kit aircraft, such as the Glasair depicted above. The implication here is of a new manufacturing industry evolving with kit type aircraft being built for both domestic and export markets. Another type that could be fully built locally is the Lancair, while such types as the locally designed single seat Corby Starlet could also be offered complete with either VW or Subaru powerplant at a viable price for the sport aviator. VLA aircraft could also be employed in the initial stages of flight training under the same limitations as currently pertaining to LPAs. This would theoretically allow a student to merely demonstrate his or her prowess to an instructor after a minimum of 40 hours on the VL A orLPA. Thus, aircraft in the VL A class could also be used for ab initio flight training though it is generally considered that their primary market would be for the recreational private flyer wanting an interesting alternative to the mass of rapidly ageing Cessnas and Pipers from another era.
The Royal Aero Club of NSW has been wound up by receivers.
