The first of 62 GAG GA-25 Winjeels entered service as the RAAF's primary trainer in 1955, continuing on in the role until replaced by the New Zealand built GT-4 Airtrainer in the mid 1970s. The Winjeel was a popular, aerobatics capable trainerand a number have now entered the civil register, including A85-422 which is now VH-SO8. Others remain in RAAF service as forward air control aircraft.

Commodore Norman Lee continues his series of articles on aircraft he flew during his service with the Fleet Air Arm.
I only had a short association with the Winjeel, a matter of some forty hours flown on the Instructor’s course at East Sale. In that time I came to like the aircraft and thought it was a solid little machine, well suited to the training role, apart from two characteristics which I felt needed sorting out.
Firstly, the elevator was too heavy, and secondly the aircraft had a tendency to enter a spiral dive when initiating a spin if the ailerons were not placed in a certain position (inspin from memory). The latter characteristic was certainly not good in a training aircraft. I assume both problems were sorted out in due course.
