• British Aerospace is examining options to develop new versions of the HS. 748 and the Manchester Division is hoping to obtain management approval to proceed with the first phase by the end of the year. An improved nose cone with a lightweight composite structure, an advanced technology flight deck and a swept back fin and rudder are being considered. Powerplant selections include the General Electric CT64, Rolls-Royce RB506 and PW100, with the latter engine being favoured if it can provide the 2,800-3,000shp which a stretched fuselage 60/64 seat passenger version would require. • Following the completion of the last two Sabreliner 658, the Rockwell El Sugendo plant has been returned to Northrop. The Sabreliner Division will proceed with the Sabreliner 40R remanufacturing program at St Louis and Perryville.

The Vanuatu Government will take a 60% interest in the new national airline Air Vanuatu and Ansett Transport Industries will hold the balance of the shares. Ansett will provide aircraft and resources for a weekly service between Sydney and Vila.
