Even though petroleum prices are likely to be higher in 2005 than today, fuel comparisons should be conducted on an apples-for apples basis, rather than comparing 1991 costs with 2005 as is often done. Obviously, all users will be buying fuel at the same price. The main macroeconomic trend to watch will be whether, as aircraft makers predict, traffic will increase from today's 1,000 billion revenue passenger miles a year by 2,500%. If the high cost of fuel (or a recession of the world or national economies) trims back travel demand the economic judgment on the HSCT will have to be made on the and conditions prevailing at that time.

Jet Jubilee Challenge: The Son of Concorde
The sons and grandsons ofthe engineers who delivered the jet age 50 years ago are working now on a project just as challenging – the power plants for son of Concorde, the high speed commercial transport (HSCT).
However, while the Whittles and the Ohains had the air marshals and generals breathing down their necks, today’s engineers are being dogged by economists and ecologists. The challenge for 2005 lies not so much in building the engine, although this in itself is a monumental project. As yet the technology does not all exist, but it can be predicted and is essentially discoverable. The surmounting challenge lies in designing engines which will:
• Not only deliver Mach 2. 5 flight but be capable of operating economically enough to compete in a passenger market with miserly 747 derivatives.
