Trans-Pacific Power Struggle Increases as Northwest Enters Market
Late last year Australia came close to hosting the four biggest US carriers without even having a say on the subject.
In the span of a fortnight, two deals involving Australian routes were almost struck amongst US carriers that would have replaced the sixth and thirteenth largest with the third and fourth. Less than a month later, two other North American airlines cut back or completely withdrew from Australia/New Zealand, while Qantas and Air New Zealand agreed to launch a historic consolidation of their trans-Pacific operations. In that six week span preceding the Persian Gulf war, the structure of aviation between Australia/ New Zealand and North America underwent more significant change than in the past six years.
One result is the July arrival of US megacarrier Northwest Airlines. Fourth largest US airline, Northwest bought Hawaiian Airlines’ route between Sydney and Honolulu. Fending off challenges from other US carriers, Northwest started services on 1 July. The other deal never went through.
