On The Airbands
The “Mojo” callsign mystery has been cleared up once and for all. Some eighteen months ago, an aircraft exited Richmond RAAF Base and climbed out to high altitude over water to the east. The callsign: “Mojo 27”. I suspected at first it was a C-5 Galaxy, but until recently had no further clues to shed light on the matter.
Listening to FleetSatCom 261. 450 MHz on narrow FM one morning recently, I copied two US servicemen discussing an aircraft which had been forced to return to its departure airfield, due to a condensation problem in its GNS Omega navigation unit. The aeroplane was described as a C-12, which is a Beech- craft twin engined turboprop, the military version of the Super King Air, And yes. . . you guessed it. . . the callsign was “Mojo”. “Mojo niner-seven” to be precise!
There is no guarantee I guess that the original “Mojo 27” heard all that time ago out of Richmond was a C-12, but I will say that the C-12 aircraft is capable of achieving altitudes in excess of 35,000 feet, dependant on all-up-weight (AUW). It also has an endurance capable of spanning over 2,000 miles, so it could have been a C-12. Notwithstanding this, any “Mojo” callsign heard on any bands I would certainly appreciate hearing about. And if you do hear it, try to ascertain the aircraft type in operation and any other information you can glean. I am building a profile of the Unit operating the aircraft. And from information just to hand from a military source, it is a light transport unit based at Clark (USAF) AFB in the Philippines. As often happens, it’s only after I stumble on information myself that further details start to roll in by phone or mail!
