10 Years Ago Doubts have been expressed that the USAF will go ahead with the re-engining of its 615 strong KC-135 fleet with the CFM56 turbofan despite the plan to re-engine half of the fleet during 1983/87 and the current $US148m contract for conversion and testing to be completed by 1983. General Lew Allen, the USAF Chief of Staff, has said that while the USAF would like to proceed to re-engine all of its KC-135s, the unit cost of $US11. 2m will rule this out. Of this amount, $US6m is for the CFM56s while the remainder is for other modifications to the airframe and systems.
Boeing delivered its 4,000th jetliner, a 727-200 to Ansett Airlines of Australia, on 3 August.
